TPTCC SETUP & SIM ISSUES
I am new to TPTCC - can I race in your series?
Unfortunately, signups for the 2002 TPTCC Online Winter Series are currently closed at this time. This is due to the race server bandwith limitations that restrict the size of the online racing fields to 21 cars per race. TPTCC Administration is looking at the possibility of adding more classes or groups to the racing format in the future. The most up-to-date information regarding league signups can be found on this page, the TPTCC home page, or The Pits website.
How do I get set up to race in
TPTCC? (This is a somewhat lengthy explanation, so please
bear with us...)
The TPTCC Series is currently using a modified version of NASCAR Heat (NHeat) utilizing Thomas Heineman & John Bodin's DTM Mod. That being said, you will first need a full retail copy of NASCAR Heat. Do a full installation of NHeat on your hard drive, to the default location the NHeat installer attempts to place it - *NOTE* - it is VERY important that a full installation of NHeat is done and that it is installed in the default location that the NHeat installer asks for!!! This assures that the DTM Mod will be installed properly when that takes place. Now the fun begins - you must follow the steps below in the order given.
First, get the Multipatch-noCD (MGI/Jan Kohl/The Pits) installation utility. This tool contains and will install the 3 "factory" NHeat patches (v 1.1, 1.3 & 1.5) in the order required, modify certain NHeat files as required, and install the No CD patch, which is needed to use custom tracks and cars not included in NHeat.
Now its time for the DTM main installer (Thomas Heineman). Its pretty self-explanatory, just be sure it points to your NHeat directory (which it will if you followed the instructions so far).
Then comes DTM car update 2 (Thomas Heineman), the DTM Alfa Patch (Thomas Heineman), and then the DTM 1.1 patch (Thomas Heineman), all installed in that order. Once these are installed, go into Windows Explorer and make sure you do not have both a \data and a \run directory within your \NASCAR Heat directory - this has been troublesome for some people. If you used the Multipatch-noCD installer called out above, it should show a \run directory within your NHeat directory.
A handy utility that comes highly recommended is Thomas Heineman's DTM Launcher. The DTM Launcher will allow you to set the Hardcore mode in NHeat/DTM (which is required for TPTCC competition), set High or Low Detail, and several other options when starting the DTM mod. Very handy - get it at Thomas' DTM Challenge website Go to the "Patches" link and scroll down about 3/4 of the way until you see "DTM Launcher v0.5.1".
Now you will need some tracks, specifically road courses - Sears Point & Watkins Glen are the only two roadies that come with the original NHeat, so go to the TPTCC Files page and get the five tracks found there (Laguna Seca 2, Brno, Donington, Mugello v1.1, & Indy RC). Other road courses available for download on the Web are: Aardvark Park, Imola, Portland & Road Atlanta, all available at esimracing.com, and Assen & Mosport at Lucky's NHEIC site. (A rear camber fix for RA can also be found on the TPTCC Files page).
*NOTE* - If you keep all of the NHeat tracks from the original NHeat installation and add other mods and more tracks, you will run into problems once you have more than 32 tracks in your NASCAR Heat\Run directory - the sim will crash back to the Windows desktop if you try to run at any tracks once you have more than 32 tracks installed. A neat utility that addresses this problem is Thomas Heineman's NASCAR Heat Track Swap Utility, also available at eSimRacing.com. It's an easy-to-use interface that lets you manage the amount of tracks you have in your NASCAR Heat\Run directory at any one time to avoid the crashes back to the desktop that will take surely place if you have more than 32 tracks installed in your NHeat\run directory.
That's it!! Back to the Desktop, click on the DTM Launcher shortcut and its off to DTM to get the sim set up and the wheel/pedals dialed in - please refer to your NHeat Instruction Manual to get acquainted with NHeat/DTM and get things configured.
Why does my car seem to wander all over on the straightaways?
*First of all*, go to the Windows>Control Panel>Gaming Controls/Options area and calibrate your controls there. You may end up at your Windows-based software that came with your steering wheel & pedals, but do your calibration on the Windows side first. This is where NHeat gets it calibration values from, not in the sim like most have done in the past. Once that is done, fire up NHeat/DTM, proceed to the Options>Controls screen in the sim, then click on "Advanced". On the Advanced screen there are adjustments that can be made to "fine-tune" your wheel & pedal settings.
With the variety of wheel and pedal sets out there, no one set of adjustments will work that same for everyone, but a somewhat common group of settings to start with is to adjust the Dead Spot & Overshoot settings all the way off, and adjust the Non-Linear Steering setting to approx. 3/4 of the way across the bar (on). Now these settings may or may not be right for the wheel & pedals you use, so you may have to keep adjusting until you find what works for your system.
After making any adjustments, first check for any differences in how the wheel shown in the upper RH corner of the Advanced screen responds to any changes you make - for the wandering car, go slowly through the area where you will be steering straight ahead and look for any irregularities and/or smoother operation after making any adjustments.
*NOTE* For those of you running other NHeat mods, it has been recognized that having your wheel/pedals "fine-tuned" in Options>Controls>Advanced in NHeat/DTM does not mean that your wheel & pedals will work exactly the same in another NHeat mod - if needed, you may have to tweak your Advanced settings in each respective mod to get your controls working the way you like them.
Does NHeat/DTM support split-axis controls?
Yes it does - please be sure that your controls and any
associated controller software are configured correctly. There is no setting within
the NHeat Options>Controls settings to activate any split-axis settings, that is done
when you reconfigure your control settings from the default ones that come with
NHeat/DTM. If for some reason you did not have your wheel & pedals configured
for split-axis operation the first time you configured your controls in the sim, go back
and reconfigure them so NHeat can recognize your split-axis controller settings.
Why do I see cars that are all-red, all-white, or have a jumbled-up NASCAR paint scheme on them?
The most common reason this happens is having a computer that is lacking some "horsepower", or running an older video card. The required system to run NHeat is only a PII 233 with 32 megs of RAM and a 4 mb Direct 3D compatible video card, but anyone close to that sort of system will not be able to enjoy all the "eye candy" that NHeat/DTM has to offer! When you run NHeat or any of the modified versions, it determines several performance parameters - with the hardware information it gathers from your computer, you are given either 512x512 car textures or 256x256 car textures. The original version of NHeat has both included - the big difference with DTM and other mods is that they usually only come with the 512x512 car textures.
So if you do have an older system or video card and see the red, white, or the "Andy Warhol" version of the NASCAR paintjobs, the workaround for this is go to your C:\Program Files\Hasbro Interactive\NASCAR Heat\DTM folder and rename the file called "paint.res" to "paint256.res" - essentially, you are fooling the software into using the 512x512 textures instead. The car graphics aren't as sharp or crisp looking, but it has worked for the majority of those who have tried it.
Another known issue is that of a newer computer & AGP video card, but having an older 3D accelerator card (Monster I, II, or III) installed that NHeat was recognizing first and running the sim with, causing the degraded graphics. Either try disabling the older 3D accelerator card in Windows Device Manager, or you may even have to remove the card & software from your computer to let NHeat "see" your AGP video card when NHeat starts up.
I don't like the view from the drivers seat - can the drivers field of view be changed?
The simple answer is - no. We've asked the best too... live with it. :-) You can always drive from one of the chase views - while in the sim, hit the F3 key till you find one you like best.
How do I install custom tracks that I have downloaded into DTM?
Most all of the custom tracks for NHeat out there have there own installers incorporated into them (.exe file extension). When you launch the installer to load the track, double-check that the installer is putting the track in the C:\Program Files\Hasbro Interactive\Nascar Heat\run directory.
Once the track installation is done and you are getting booted back to the desktop or crashing, check these settings for the new track. Also, you cannot have more than 32 tracks installed in your NHeat\run directory. The fix for that issue can be found here.
How do I get the sim to run when I have more than 32 tracks
that I want to keep?
As many of you may know, all track files are contained in your NHeat/Run directory. For those of you that run different NHeat mods and gather up the various tracks associated with the various mods, you can exceed 32 tracks in short order. When you do exceed 32 tracks in your NHeat/Run directory, NHeat, or the mod, will let you get all the way to starting the race, then bounce you back to the Windows desktop.
By far and away, the easiest fix for this problem is to
go to eSimRacing.com (NHeat>Utilities) and download a copy of Thomas Heineman's NASCAR Heat Track Swap Utility. It's an easy-to-use interface that lets you manage the amount of tracks you have in your NASCAR Heat\Run directory at any one time to avoid the crashes back to the desktop that will take surely place if you have more than 32 tracks installed in your NHeat\run directory. Back to top
Why do some tracks crash back to the Desktop when I try to run there?
This can happen for several reasons - too many tracks in your NHeat/Run directory (see the next fix above for that one) is one of them, but if you have that taken care of, here are a couple of other things to look at if you continue to have troubles, especially with a custom track.
My car handles terribly - where can I get some setups?
The best place to get TPTCC/DTM setups - and setups for many other mods - is at the Turn4Grafix website - TPTCC competitor Rusty Greer has, what we think is, a full-time job developing setups for NHeat and its many mods!! Go get them and try them out - if you don't drive exactly like Rusty, at least you'll have something to work with in the garage... Good luck trying to catch him with them though! Many sim racing websites have great setup information and how-to's available on them. There is a load of good info linked from Ricardo Nunnini's GPL Driving & Setups Links page if you're interested in reading up on setups and driving technique. A link for Brian Beckman's "Physics of Racing" series can be found there, and at The Pits website - select Quickfix & Physics in the left hand column. Brian's information will give you a physicist's view of what your car is doing in intimate detail!
How do I watch a replay?
When the game loads, select Options at the bottom center of the Main or Race Day menu screen, then select Replay.

How do I get screenshots from NHeat/DTM?
The "standard" version for getting screenshots in NHeat/DTM is to go into your previously saved DTM replay, cue up the screenshot that you want to save, and hit the Print Screen button. Then, get out of the sim, go into your favorite graphics program that opens your saved Print Screen image (MS Paint always works as the old standby) and paste the saved image there. Save it for future use. This system works, but you can only save one image at a time - you have to exit the replay to go save your image each time... but it works!!
For the Paint Shop Pro users, here is a neat feature within the program that allows for multiple screen captures with the click(s) of your mouse! Here's how:
It is not known how many screenshots can be saved at one sitting with this method - if anyone finds the max number of images allowed to be saved with PSP's Capture feature, let me know, and we can post it here.
It has been noted that using the PSP-Capture method does tax your computer pretty good, so if you have limitations running NHeat/DTM you may have problems with this process - turning off all of your programs running in the background may help to use this Paint Shop Pro feature.

How do I p
Now this explanation will not go into exacting detail of how to use your graphics program to paint a car, just a few basics about using the car templates, and then how to get it into NHeat/DTM to start rubbing all that precious paint off...
:-) For those of you that do not have a graphics program to paint sim cars with, by far and away Paint Shop Pro from Jasc Software is the most popular one used by most sim painters - reasonably priced, lots of bells & whistles, and a pretty decent program to learn. A 30-day trial version is available for download (31.6 MB) at the Jasc website. The other sim painters favorite would have to be Adobe Photoshop - quite a bit more expensive, but Photoshop is what professional graphics artists use. A 30-day trial version available at the Photoshop web site too. BTW - The person writing this is a PSP 6.0 user, so any references below to working in the graphics program will be of the PSP variety!table Driver number 55 name Jan Kohl chassis Opel rank 2 race_image 100 body_style fcar end
Of course you will have to change the name, number, and chassis information to reflect your specifics. Close the file, save the changes, and if you did everything correctly, your name will now show up in the list on the Drivers Menu screen.
How do I get a driver picture of myself to show up in the
sim?
This has been relatively easy to do for some, and a pain for others to get to work right. There have been several different ways people have gotten their driver pics to show up in their sim correctly, so we hope to cover all the different methods used. The driver picture we are trying to change here are the ones that show up both before the races start (showing the starting grid before the green flag falls) and at the the end of the race, usually showing the race summary information when a race finishes (fastest lap, most laps led, etc).
Can the driver & pit crew be painted?
Yes - they are not "standard" items to change in NHeat, so you will need to download a few things, and it does take a bit of file manipulation in NHeat/DTM. The graphic images for the driver & pit crew are also stored in two different locations in NHeat, so the how-to's will be done separately, as follows:
ONLINE
RACING ISSUES
How do I get online to race in TPTCC
events?
TPTCC online racing in NHeat/DTM utilizes the Multiplayer feature within NHeat - refer to your Instruction Manual for information to connect to online races. Detailed information pertaining to the TPTCC races will be distributed to the group via the TPTCC Yahoo Groups message board just prior to the events. All races will be run on a server that TPTCC has been authorized to use. The IP address of this server will be included in the pre-race information.
I live in another country - how do I determine the correct local time I should use to join TPTCC events? Go to the TPTCC Yahoo Groups Files page and download the World Time Clock program at the bottom. Follow the instructions for World Time Clock after you get it installed and configure it to your location and that of Eastern Standard Time in the U.S., which is used for the scheduling of all TPTCC events.
When I try to connect to the TPTCC server, it says: "Not Responding"?
The server that TPTCC is using may be down, or in use by another online racing league or series. Currently, the server is NOT available at the following days & times: Tuesday at 9 pm EST, Thursday at 9 pm EST, Saturday at 8 pm EST, and Sunday at 6 pm EST. If you are attempting to connect at times other than these or when you know a race is going up, you may have problems on your end. To check how well your computer is able to connect to the authorized server, you can run a ping test and/or a trace route on your machine. These tests will also show how well your machine can connect to the TPTCC authorized server via the internet. Ping and trace route (tracert) tests are run in a MS-DOS window within Windows. A really good tutorial that explains these two items in detail can be found here.Assuming that you checked the basics and that all of those are in order, you may be the first person attempting to log on to the server for a race or practice session. If this is the case, hit cancel, and you should then see the TPTCC server on the list
.
Why do I see cars that are all-red or all-white when racing online?
When racing online with personalized paint jobs, you must have the car .tex files for the other online competitors in your DTM directory to be able to see those cars online. TPTCC Administrators maintain the official carset and the associated drivers.txt file, and it is updated and posted for download on an as-needed basis. BTW - white cars are seen in low-res (256x256) and red cars are high-res (512x512).
Can I host TPTCC online races?
TPTCC races are put up on the server and are administered by a pre-determined race official. There is no longer any set TPTCC practice schedule, but the server TPTCC uses is available and does host informal practice/test sessions on a somewhat regular basis. The owner of the server that TPTCC uses has authorized several TPTCC members to be able to set up and run races on his server, server schedule permitting. You can host personal practice/test sessions on your personal computer with NHeat's multiplayer function or on Internet Race Finder - please refer to your NHeat Instruction manual on how to use the Multiplayer feature of NHeat.
When I try to host races online,
I get booted back to the Desktop and no one can connect - why? There have been reports of TPTCC members that have had problems hosting online races in DTM using Nheats Multiplayer, via IP or on IRF. If you (the host) gets booted back to the desktop, and whoever is online with you trying to connect to your IP address receives an error message of "Lost connection Keepalive Timeout", it is because you have more than 43 entries/drivers in your drivers.txt file. The error message in the log file you get after getting booted back to the desktop reads as follows:
55.23.520: except: dec: exe 6a0b1a2Your drivers.txt file will have to be edited to reflect only 43 entries. The 12/22/01 version of the TPTCC League drivers.txt file has 43 entries in it. It is available for download at the TeamSmoke Racing website.
How to chat while in an online race?
To chat while in a race, simply type the letter T, then type your message, then hit Enter and it will post your message in the lower right hand corner of the screen.
Do the TPTCC races have an autochat
feature?
NHeat does not have an autochat feature within it similar to the Papy sims, but those TPTCC members that use Sontage Interactives Game Commander are able to program it to give autochat-like commands. Instructions as follows:
When programming the Game Commander
input info, the command would read:
(enter)(P)(A)(S)(S)(spacebar)(M)(E)(spacebar)(L)(E)(F)(T)(enter) The
parentheses are just for graphical purposes and the text doesn't need to be in capital
letters.
Some have utilized push-to-talk buttons to avoid unwanted inputs or commands in Game Commander.
Microsoft Sidewinder Game Voice is another voice recognition program that is used by TPTCC members. Some steering wheels allow text to be programmed to buttons - check your manuals out to see if you have those features available to you - they sure do come in handy on the track!
I feel that I was intentionally wrecked during a league race - what can I do the person that caused the wreck?
This comes directly from the TPTCC Rules:
The members of the TPTCC Driver Tribunal Committee are:
Adrian Collier - J.D. Ellis (aka RacerBoy71 on AOL IM & Yahoo Messenger) - Paul Hamilton - Michael Hausknecht - Jeff Hedges - Don Smartt
We would like to acknowledge those TPTCC members that have posted their problems and fixes to the TPTCC Yahoo Groups board - a lot of information for this FAQ page came from those posts. We would also like to acknowledge those racers posting their problems and fixes to the various NHeat forums out there on the internet, as information was collected there too. Corrections, changes & additions to this FAQ page are welcomed by the Administrators - send your information to Kevin Jurasinski and/or Jeff Hedges.
